Hidden Gems of Horror Movie Review: Stakeland (2010)

Stakeland which was directed by Jim Mickle and stars Connor Paulo, Nick Damici, Danielle Harris and Kelly McGillis. Essentially this is a Vampire Apocalypse movie. Think Walking Dead only with vampires instead of zombies. The movie is told from the point of view of Martin, a teenager whose family was killed by vampires and he himself is rescued and trained by a vampire hunter known only as "Mister". Mister becomes a father figure to Martin and eventually the duo pick up more stragglers , a catholic nun, a young pregnant woman and an ex- marine as they attempt to get to safety. The five of them form a unconventional family unit which makes the characters all the more relatable. From that angle the movie also kind of reminds me of the Clint Eastwood western, "The Outlaw Josie Wales", For a low budget indy horror film , this weas well directed , well shot and weel acted that includes good gore and make up effects. But most importantly characters that you care about and are invested in. You can find this movie on TUBI and I think Peacock. I give Stakeland a 8 1/2 out of 10.
